Q: Is a route taxi fare the same as a hackney carriage fare?

No. A route taxi operates on an approved route and follows that route's published fare. A hackney carriage is hired for a trip and uses the published base, distance and waiting rates.

Q: Who pays half fare under the official schedules?

The published schedules state that children, students in uniform, persons with disabilities and senior citizens pay half fare. The rural-stage notice specifies children under 12.

Q: Do the 2026 schedules publish a general luggage or extras fee?

The current schedules reviewed for this guide do not publish a general luggage, booking or extras add-on. This guide and calculator therefore do not add one.

Q: What should I do if a PPV operator charges more than the approved fare?

Record the vehicle details and contact the Transport Authority. Its July 2026 notice lists 876-926-8912 and WhatsApp numbers 876-551-8196 and 876-279-8515 for reports.

When did the current Jamaica taxi fares take effect?

The second 8% phase took effect on July 1, 2026. The Transport Authority says the combined 2026 adjustment was 16%, introduced in two 8% phases on June 2 and July 1.
