WHYFARESCHANGED

Why Jamaica taxi fares increased in 2026 — and what’s legal to charge

The approved 16% adjustment arrived in two 8% phases. Here is the official context, current limit and complaint path.

1

16% total

The approved 2026 adjustment was split across June and July.

2

8% in June

The first phase took effect on June 2, 2026.

3

8% in July

The second phase took effect on July 1, 2026.

4

Approved fares only

Overcharging remains an enforcement matter after the increase.

The official position

A two-stage increase with enforceable fare schedules.

The new rates are published by category and route. An operator cannot turn an approved adjustment into an unrestricted price.

Why the increase happened

Outstanding adjustment

Official statements describe the 16% as the outstanding portion of an adjustment approved in 2023, after 19% had already been implemented.

Transport Authority guidance tells passengers to identify an authorized public passenger vehicle.
