CURRENT LAWPPV CHECKS2026 UPDATE

Is Uber legal in Jamaica? The 2026 answer.

The app name is not the complete legal test. Jamaica regulates the paid trip, driver, and vehicle, while a dedicated national ride-hailing policy is still being developed.

1

Current law still applies

The Road Traffic Act requires the appropriate road licence when a motor vehicle is used as a public passenger vehicle.

2

Check the actual trip

A booking screen does not prove licensing. Verify the arriving vehicle, driver, red PPV plate, and Transport Authority identification.

3

Policy work is unfinished

The latest official update said a national ride-hailing Green Paper was being developed for consultation; it did not replace existing law.

4

Avoid blanket claims

A dated enforcement statement, app availability, or company policy is not a permanent legal answer for every driver and trip.

Legal status depends on the licensed service, not only the platform.

Government's June 2024 framework update said international platforms should establish a local presence, formally engage the Transport Authority, and ensure only certified and approved drivers and vehicles access their apps. The latest May 2026 update says the broader policy is still being developed. This page provides general information, not legal advice. Rules and enforcement can change; check the linked official sources and the credentials for the specific trip.

The enforceable starting point

Section 61 of the Road Traffic Act prohibits using or permitting a motor vehicle as a public passenger vehicle without the road licence required for that class. Transport Authority licensing guidance identifies licensed PPVs by red plates and other official marks.

  • Confirm the vehicle's public-passenger category
  • Check the driver's identification and the vehicle presented
  • Treat app access and legal licensing as separate questions
