Start with the red PPV plate

Licensed public passenger vehicles use red licence plates. PPV means public passenger vehicle. A red plate is the fastest first check, but it is not a complete safety or insurance guarantee.

Look for the current windshield sticker

Transport Authority guidance also identifies PPVs by the Authority's windshield sticker. Read the current year or validity information where visible instead of relying on plate colour alone.

Match the service-category markings

Route taxis should display their route and route-taxi markings; hackney carriages display taxi markings and fare or mileage information. The rules differ because these are not the same service.

Check the driver's badge and ID

The Transport Authority lists a driver's badge and its identification card among taxi indicators. For app or pre-booked trips, the person and vehicle should also match the booking.

Treat insurance as a separate check

PPV licensing requires insurance evidence, but the plate does not let a passenger verify the policy's current terms. A red plate is an indicator—not a promise that every document or trip is compliant.

At the airport, use the official pickup path
